3 Month Contract With A Local Authority


Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, solution-focused legal advice on commercial property matters, supporting the Council’s strategic priorities. The role involves acting as a trusted advisor to officers and Members, delivering innovative and legally compliant solutions across a wide range of property transactions, regeneration projects, and governance matters, in line with the principles of a modern, forward-thinking in-house legal service.




Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver expert legal advice on commercial property law and related local government matters
  • Manage a full caseload of property transactions, including leases, licences, acquisitions, disposals, easements, and development agreements
  • Advise on landlord and tenant matters, including security of tenure under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954
  • Support regeneration and development projects, including compulsory purchase orders (CPOs)
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks, including building and fire safety laws
  • Represent the Council in court, tribunals, and negotiations where required
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, acting as a trusted legal advisor
  • Provide practical, solution-oriented advice, balancing legal risk with corporate objectives
  • Undertake legal research, monitor legislative developments, and deliver briefings or training
  • Maintain high standards of case management, file compliance, and time recording
  • Contribute to service improvement and innovation within Legal Services
  • Mentor and support junior colleagues where required


Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX) in England and Wales
  • Strong experience in commercial property law and conveyancing
  • Experience handling local authority or public sector property work (desirable)
  • Knowledge of:
    • Landlord and Tenant Act 1954
    • Land Registration Act 2002
    • Building Safety and Fire Safety legislation
  • Experience of regeneration projects and/or compulsory purchase orders (desirable)
  • Ability to manage complex and high-profile legal matters
