Job Title: Multi Skilled Trades Operative
Job Purpose
To carry out a range of maintenance, repair, and
refurbishment works across North Northamptonshire Council's housing stock and
temporary accommodation. The primary focus of the role is carpentry-related
repairs and installations, ensuring properties are safe, compliant, and ready
for occupation. The postholder will also undertake general multi-trade duties,
contributing to the efficient delivery of housing maintenance services and
providing a high-quality service to residents and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Carpentry and Building Maintenance
- Carry
out carpentry repairs and maintenance work, including easing, adjusting,
repairing, and fitting fire doors.
- Install,
repair, and maintain kitchen units, worktops, and associated fixtures and
fittings.
- Undertake
general building repairs within occupied and void properties.
- Complete
maintenance works in accordance with job specifications and quality
standards.
Multi-Trade Duties
- Perform
patch plastering repairs and making-good works.
- Carry
out basic brickwork repairs where required.
- Assist
with a variety of responsive and planned maintenance tasks across
temporary accommodation and housing stock.
- Support
property refurbishment and preparation works for new tenants.
Repairs and Voids
- Respond
promptly to repair requests within occupied properties.
- Inspect,
identify, and rectify maintenance issues to minimise disruption to
residents.
- Carry
out void property repairs and refurbishment to ensure homes meet lettable
standards.
- Ensure
accommodation is safe, functional, and ready for occupancy.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Adhere
to all Health and Safety policies, procedures, and safe systems of work.
- Comply
with asbestos management procedures and follow relevant guidance when
working on properties.
- Use
tools, equipment, and materials safely and responsibly.
- Report
hazards, defects, accidents, and near misses in line with Council
procedures.
Customer Service and Administration
- Deliver
a professional, customer-focused service when interacting with tenants and
residents.
- Maintain
accurate records of completed work and repairs.
- Communicate
effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and tenants regarding repair
progress and property issues.
- Ensure
work is completed efficiently and to a high standard.
Travel and Operational Requirements
- Travel
between North Northamptonshire locations as required.
- Use
own vehicle to commute to and from work and travel during working hours.
- Submit
mileage claims in accordance with Council policy.
Experience Required
Essential
- Significant
carpentry experience gained within a maintenance, repairs, or construction
environment.
- Previous
employment as a Multiskilled Trade Operative, Carpenter, or
similar trade role.
- Experience
carrying out repairs and maintenance within residential properties.
- Experience
fitting and adjusting doors, including fire doors.
- Experience
installing and repairing kitchen units and worktops.
- Ability
to work independently and manage workloads effectively.
Desirable
- Previous
experience working on void properties and responsive repairs.
- Experience
within social housing, local authority, or housing association
environments.
- Experience
undertaking patch plastering and basic brickwork repairs.
- Experience
working within occupied properties while maintaining excellent customer
service standards.
Qualifications
Essential
- Recognised
trade qualification in Carpentry or a related construction trade (NVQ
Level 2 or equivalent experience).
- Full
UK Driving Licence.
- Access
to a reliable vehicle for business use.
Desirable
- NVQ
Level 3 in Carpentry or Building Maintenance.
- Asbestos
Awareness Certificate.
- Health
and Safety qualification or certification.
- Manual
Handling Training.
- Fire
Door Installation or Maintenance training.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong
carpentry skills with the ability to undertake a range of maintenance
tasks.
- Good
knowledge of fire door repair and installation requirements.
- Practical
experience across multiple trades, including kitchen fitting, plastering,
and basic brickwork.
- Excellent
problem-solving and fault-finding abilities.
- Ability
to work safely and comply with health and safety regulations.
- Strong
communication and customer service skills.
- Ability
to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good
organisational and time-management skills.

Additional Information
- Location: Kettering and Corby Depots
- Working
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm
- Pay
Rate: £24.48 per hour (Umbrella)
- Contract
Type: Temporary assignment, initially for 3 months with the potential
for extension due to ongoing work requirements
- Travel: Regular travel between properties and locations across North
Northamptonshire is required
- Vehicle
Requirement: Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence and have
access to their own vehicle for commuting and business travel during
working hours
- Mileage: Business mileage will be reimbursed at the approved standard rate
- Primary
Trade Requirement: Candidates must have substantial carpentry
experience as their main trade
- Desirable
Additional Trade Skills: Kitchen fitting (worktops and units), patch
plastering, and basic brickwork
- Asbestos
Awareness: Candidates holding an Asbestos Awareness Certificate are
preferred; however, training can be provided if required
- Social
Housing Experience: Previous experience working on responsive repairs,
void properties, and within a social housing environment would be
advantageous.
