3 Month Contract With A Local Authority


Job Purpose

The Solicitor (Corporate & Environmental Law) will provide expert legal advice, guidance, and representation to internal and external clients across a range of matters, with a focus on property, planning, highways, rights of way, and major commercial projects. The role supports the delivery of high-quality legal services while ensuring compliance with professional standards and contributing to continuous service improvement.



Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a personal caseload, providing expert legal advice, representation, and advocacy across corporate and environmental law matters.
  • Advise and represent clients in legal proceedings, meetings, and negotiations as required.
  • Provide legal support in areas including property, planning, highways, rights of way, and major commercial projects.
  • Maintain compliance with professional standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies and procedures.
  • Monitor legal developments and advise on changes that may impact service delivery or the Authority.
  • Contribute to the development of legal policies, procedures, and business improvements.
  • Deliver training, guidance, and professional support to colleagues and clients where appropriate.
  • Supervise and support junior officers within Legal Services.
  • Build and maintain expertise across allocated legal disciplines.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to deliver high-quality, customer-focused legal services.


Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive (or equivalent) with a current practising certificate where applicable.
  • Experience managing a varied legal caseload, ideally within local government or the public sector.
  • Strong knowledge of property, planning, highways, rights of way, and/or commercial law.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, advocacy, and advisory skills.
  • Ability to interpret legislation and provide practical, solution-focused legal advice.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative legal team.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and maintaining legal expertise.
