6 month contract role with a Local Authority
Job Summary:
• Building Control Technician required to support the supervision of building works across the borough to ensure compliance with relevant building control legislation, including the Building Act and Building Regulations.
• The role involves plan examination, site inspections, enforcement support, and liaison with internal teams, external agencies, and the public.
• The post holder will assist in managing a caseload of projects, providing technical advice, supporting fee recovery processes, and ensuring building works meet statutory requirements within agreed timescales.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):
• Assist in supervising building control activity across an allocated area of the borough to ensure compliance with building legislation and regulations.
• Examine building plans, review technical calculations, and prepare technical reports and correspondence.
• Carry out site inspections at various stages of construction to monitor compliance with approved plans and statutory regulations.
• Identify building regulation contraventions and assist with enforcement actions where necessary, including potential court attendance.
• Liaise with internal departments such as Development Control, Environmental Health, and Local Land Charges regarding related matters.
• Ensure statutory consultation with external agencies when required.
• Respond to enquiries regarding building control matters from members of the public, councillors, MPs, building professionals, and contractors.
• Maintain accurate records including casework details, time monitoring, travel records, and updates on internal IT systems.
• Assist in promoting the council’s Building Control service and supporting service delivery initiatives.
• Support the assessment and recovery of statutory fees and charges, protecting the council’s financial interests.
• Participate in departmental projects and undertake additional duties as directed by senior officers.
Skills/Experience:
• Degree in Construction, Building Surveying, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Working towards or holding professional membership with RICS or an equivalent professional body.
• Knowledge of the Building Act 1984 and Building Regulations.
• Understanding of building construction, structural engineering principles, or fire safety in buildings.
• Experience in inspecting construction works and supervising building activities on site.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings, plans, and structural calculations.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills when dealing with complex building projects.
• Good written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and liaising with stakeholders.
• Ability to manage caseloads and meet deadlines within a regulatory environment.
• Experience working with contractors, developers, architects, and members of the public.
• Competent IT skills for case management systems and administrative record keeping.
Additional Information:
• Bi-Weekly Payments.
• Location: 5 Pancras Square, London (Hybrid – 3 days remote, 2 days office).
• Contract Length: 24 weeks.
• Hours: 36 hours per week.
• Vacancies: 2 positions.
• Rate: Umbrella/Limited: £49.93 per hour.
• The role involves regular site inspections, including use of ladders, scaffolding, and entering excavations.
• Occasional exposure to construction site conditions such as noise and dust.
• The post holder may be required to work independently on site inspections.
• A CSCS card is desirable.
• Candidates must have the right to work in the UK and provide required compliance documentation.
