Purpose of the Job

The Occupational Therapist Assistant will work under the supervision of a qualified Occupational Therapist within the Reablement Service. The post holder will undertake strengths-based occupational therapy assessments and reviews for individuals receiving occupational therapy equipment and domiciliary care.

The role involves working within relevant legislation, including the Care Act 2014 and the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act, to promote independence, reduce unnecessary handoffs, and ensure environmental changes are appropriately reflected in care provision. The post holder will work in partnership with service users, carers, and a range of professionals to deliver effective occupational therapy interventions and will maintain accurate case records on appropriate IT systems.



Key Duties

  • Carry out strengths-based occupational therapy assessments and reviews under the supervision of a qualified Occupational Therapist.

  • Assess the need for and arrange the provision of specialist equipment and minor adaptations to support independence and safety.

  • Support assessments under relevant legislation, including the Care Act 2014 and Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act.

  • Undertake mobility assessments and determine eligibility for concessionary travel schemes (e.g. Blue Badge, Freedom Pass, Parking Bays).

  • Identify and manage risks associated with equipment and the home environment.

  • Provide advice, information, signposting and set up TeleCare and assistive technology where appropriate.

  • Work collaboratively with service users, carers, internal teams and external professionals to deliver person-centred outcomes.

  • Monitor the effectiveness of equipment and interventions and review as required.

  • Maintain accurate, timely and professional case records on council IT systems.

  • Recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns in line with agreed procedures.

  • Contribute to team meetings, service development and continuous improvement activities.


Requirements

  • Accredited Trusted Assessor Qualification.

  • Enhanced DBS clearance (required).

  • Working knowledge of the Care Act 2014 and related legislation.

  • Understanding of strengths-based and person-centred practice.

  • Knowledge of specialist equipment, adaptations and assistive technology.

  • Awareness of the needs of people with physical and sensory disabilities.

  • Strong assessment and clinical reasoning skills.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with a wide range of people.

  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage and prioritise workload.

  • Accurate record-keeping and report-writing skills.

  • Ability to work independently while recognising professional boundaries.

  • Competent IT skills for case management and recording.

  • Experience of carrying out occupational therapy assessments or reviews.

  • Experience of promoting independence using a strengths-based approach.

  • Experience of working collaboratively with service users, carers and professionals.

  • Experience of recommending and reviewing equipment and simple adaptations (under supervision).
