Job description

3 months contract with local authority


This role involves managing a substantial caseload of complex legal work within one of several specialized teams, such as Adults Education & Employment, Housing & Litigation, Regeneration & Property, Planning & Procurement, or Safeguarding. The position is crucial for providing high-level legal advice and representation to Elected Members, senior managers, and external clients, ensuring compliance with legal standards and supporting the Council's policy objectives. The role also includes managing and supervising both directly and indirectly managed staff, promoting legal services, and ensuring adherence to modern legal practices and regulations.

Responsibilities


  • Handle a significant caseload of complex legal work, offering expert advice to Elected Members, senior managers, and external clients.
  • Represent the Council and clients in various courts and tribunals, and instruct Counsel for higher court matters.
  • Provide legal guidance on complex issues with substantial implications for the Council.
  • Act on behalf of the Council as directed by the Assistant Head of Legal Services.
  • Advise on legal aspects of transformation and development projects to enhance customer outcomes and meet financial targets.
  • Lead and manage team staff, overseeing work allocation and providing legal supervision.
  • Stay updated on legal developments and ensure team compliance with best practices and regulations.
  • Promote Legal Services through training, seminars, and guidance, enhancing understanding of legal procedures.
  • Ensure staff management activities align with authority policies and procedures.
  • Deputize for the Assistant Head of Legal Services when necessary.
  • Participate in Council working parties and external meetings.
  • Conduct employee investigations and appeals per RBG policies.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations, Equal Opportunities, Customer Care policies, and the New Technology agreement.


Requirements


  • Extensive experience in handling complex legal work within a specialized legal practice area.
  • Proven ability to provide high-level legal advice and representation.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience in managing and supervising staff.
  • Excellent understanding of legal standards, regulations, and Council policy objectives.
  • Ability to promote legal services and provide training and guidance.
  • Competence in managing recruitment, training, and performance activities in line with authority policies.
  • Capability to deputize for senior legal roles and participate in cross-Council initiatives.
