2-3 month contract role with a Local Authority
Job Summary:
• Oversee and manage highway maintenance activities across the network, ensuring roads, footways and drainage systems are maintained to a safe and compliant standard.
• Deliver reactive, preventative and cyclical maintenance programmes, with a strong focus on highways drainage and flood management.
• Act as a key front-line representative for the Council, responding to incidents, engaging with communities and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample):
• Undertake routine highway inspections, identifying defects and prioritising maintenance requirements.
• Investigate highway issues, particularly drainage and flooding, using site visits, data analysis and specialist techniques (e.g. CCTV surveys, ground investigations).
• Respond to incidents such as flooding, collisions and spillages, ensuring the network remains safe and operational.
• Scope, order and manage highway maintenance works, including cost estimation, contractor coordination and progress monitoring.
• Plan and programme cyclical and reactive maintenance works to minimise disruption and deliver value for money.
• Work closely with contractors to ensure works are delivered to required standards, timescales and budgets.
• Engage with local communities, parish councils and stakeholders, incorporating local knowledge into maintenance planning.
• Maintain accurate records, reports and data using IT systems, including spreadsheets and (ideally) GIS.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, risk management processes and council policies.
• Contribute to a “one team” approach, supporting cross-team collaboration and service improvement.
Skills/Experience:
• Strong experience in highway maintenance, particularly drainage and flood management (essential).
• Knowledge of highway legislation, including Highways Act 1980, New Roads & Street Works Act 1991 and Road Traffic Act 1988.
• Experience in winter maintenance operations (desirable).
• Ability to investigate issues, analyse data and produce clear, structured reports.
• Experience managing contractors and overseeing works delivery.
• Competent in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook).
• Experience using GIS systems (desirable).
• Good understanding of health and safety practices within highways/construction environments.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Full UK driving licence (essential).
• CSCS card (desirable).
Additional Information:
• Bi-Weekly Payments.
• Client: Cambridgeshire County Council.
• Contract: Temporary (3 months, with potential extension).
• Hours: 37 per week (09:00 – 17:30).
• Pay Rate: £250 per day (Umbrella).
• Working Pattern: Hybrid (approx. 2 days on-site, remainder remote).
• Role Type: Field-based / Hybrid.
• Requirement: Strong highways drainage and maintenance experience essential.
• Full UK driving licence required.
